  1. J H says:

A pattern for sewing is the design of the pieces you will need to cut from fabric. It is usually printed on tissue paper or thin paper. You pin it to the fabric, cut it out, and sew the item together.

  2. Eunice Lamsen says:

A pattern in sewing and fashion design is an original garment from which other garments of a similar style are copied. It can also refer to the paper or cardboard templates from which the parts of a garment are traced onto fabric before cutting out and assembling (sometimes called paper patterns).

Basically, you’re buying a template with instructions. It comes on this thin paper, all folded up into a ridiculously small envelope. Trying to refold a pattern is worse than trying to refold a map!

You check the back of the envelope and it gives you suggestions of what fabric to buy and tells you how much to buy, depending on how wide your chosen fabric happens to be.
