Your best bet is to go to the fabric store and look through their books. the patterns are labeled “easy” or “intermediate” or whatever, and the pieces will be full size. The directions will be complete, including what kind of material to buy and how much.

You can pre-shop online, but the patterns will be MUCH cheaper in the store.

most machine manufacturers have various projects on their websites, ranging from very easy to fairly complex — and they’re not machine-specific. (the clutch purse is a good slightly advanced project for beginners)

The Connie Amaden Crawford patterns for women (see the Butterick catalog) have simple designs, clear instructions, and a wide range of sizes (extra small to 5X or 6X) as well as being consistently drafted.

I have also had good luck with Kwik Sew and Stretch & Sew patterns and the Vogue patterns by Sandra Betzina being very consistent on how they fit and having clearly written instructions.

Kwik Sew has patterns for men, women, children, infants, and toddlers for knit and woven fabrics. Stretch & Sew tends more to patterns for women, although they have had a few in the past for men and children.

Burda is also good (consistently drafted) but their instructions are minimal as there is an expectation that people using their patterns usually know how to sew. But the STYLE can be incredible!
